The CRCT measures what students should know and be able to do at their grade level, based on the state's curriculum. Georgia students in grades 1-8 take the CRCT in reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. Students in grades 3-8 also are assessed in science and social studies. For promotion, the state requires students in grade 3 to pass the reading CRCT. Georgia students in grades 5 and 8 are required to pass the reading and math CRCT subtests.
The state is phasing in a new curriculum-- the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS)-- for selected grade levels and core subject areas over the next several years. The more rigorous GPS replaces the state's Quality Core Curriculum (QCC). During the phase-in, the various CRCT subtests for grades 1-8 will continue to measure mastery of the state curriculum in place at test time-- either the GPS or the QCC standards, depending on the year. Student performance is expressed as an average scale score for students at that school.
For subtests covering the QCC, the average score falls on a scale ranging from 150 to 450 for each grade and content area. For subtests covering the new GPS, the average score falls on a scale ranging from 650 to 950 for each grade level and content area. (Note: It is not appropriate to compare GPS and QCC scale scores during the phase-in, as the two scales are not aligned.)
